Checking for Roof Damage After a Storm
Storms bring high winds, hail, and water down on your commercial roof, and even the best roofs can sustain damage. After a storm, it is best to check on your building for roof damage to prevent any issues from getting worse when the original problem only needed a simple fix Here are the major signs of problems from wind, water or hail.
Wind and Debris
High winds not only cause roof damage directly, but they can also blow debris, like tree branches, onto your roof. You should check all roofing components such as membrane seams or flashings for any weak points. Common signs of wind related damage include flashing separated from roof, membrane moving from the wind, and loose fasteners. You should also check the roof membrane for any punctures from debris.
Water Damage
If high winds caused any weak points, there is a good possibility your roof might have taken in water. Water leaks will cause damage to the interior of your property if not taken care of. After checking for weak points, check the interior ceilings for any signs of water stains. Heavy rain can also cause excessive ponding water on your roof, which if not taken care of immediately can cause major issues with your roof.
Hail Damage
Like debris, hail can puncture and undermine the integrity of your roof. Other components like HVAC units, skylights, and metal flashing are also susceptible to hail damage. After a hailstorm, it is important to check for any signs of roof damage as the problems may not be immediately obvious. Any signs of dents, cracks, or punctures on any parts of the roofing system or equipment are a giveaway to damage that could cause leaks in the future.
