When looking into clean energy alternatives, solar panels on roofs are a great option. It takes up little space and has little to no obscurities with the sun.  It is necessary to make sure that your current roofing system can bear the additional weight. That’s why it is best to have a roofing professional inspect your roof prior to installation.

Installation of Solar Panels

Since there are many different types of roofs, the installation process for solar panels on roofs is different as well. For example, a flat, membrane roof typically does not need penetrations made, but instead the system is weighted down. This is similar to the way a standing seam metal roof has solar panels attached. The system uses a clamp that is attached to the raised seam then the solar panel is attached to the clamp. With a corrugated metal roof, a bracket is used and that is attached with screws. The installation on each roofing system is different but should not affect the roof if it is done properly.

Prior to Installation

Before the installation of solar panels on roofs, the condition of the roof needs to be inspected. This is to make sure the roof is ready to have additional equipment added. If the roof needs repairs or it is time to replace your current roof, you will want to address these issues first. These extra costs may not be ideal or budgeted in the project, but you will save money over trying to make the repairs or replacement after the solar panels are installed.

Future Repairs

If the roof is in good shape and no updates are needed, it is a good idea to check with your roofing company to see if the installation of solar panels will affect the roof’s warranty. In many cases it may just void the area where the solar panels will be installed. A roofing company that has experience completing repairs with solar panels on roofs is who you want to complete the work. Should their findings indicate that some or all solar panels be removed to make the repairs, they will be able to let you know during the free estimate.
